My teenage daughter had music theory lessons once a week with Andrew over the period of a few months. Andrew was a very effective teacher with clear goals. His lessons were intensive, focused and interesting. He prepared her for the exam (grade 5) very quickly and she got a distinction.

I definitely recommend him for those who want to achieve high results.

Highly competent and reliable teacher and a great, internationally recognised musician.

Andrew Durban has been thorough, patient and very successful in getting my three sons through their Grade 5 Theory. He adapted well to different approaches to learning and his enthusiasm for the subject seems contagious.

I moved to Norwich 6 years ago, at which time I started to learn an instrument and study Music Theory.  I remained with my original teacher until last summer, by which time I had reached Grade 4 Music Theory, but the lengthy journey to lessons had become too difficult.  I found a local piano teacher but she did not teach Music Theory, so I was delighted to discover that Andrew Durban, a well-known professional bass player, lived near me.  Andrew has now been teaching me Music Theory for several months and I have come to realise how his approach to teaching not only prepares one for the next Grade exam. but also lays out the fuller picture of harmony.  When I first went to Andrew I was in awe of so talented and knowledgeable a musician but have found him to be incredibly patient and someone who ensures that his explanations are absolutely clear.  In my experience he imparts knowledge in a way that is simple to understand and which shows how the related topics of Theory compliment each other.  I would recommend his teaching to anyone who wants to understand the convoluted topics needed to understand the interlocking aspects of Harmony and do well in their Grade exams.

During the period of November 2019 to early 2021, I was taught by Andrew. As a teacher, he was very approachable to ask questions and go over specifics within the lesson. He was clearly knowledgeable and clearly knew his game plan for the lesson. Alongside being clear and stringent on the structure and the progress of the lesson, he was very adaptable to me not understanding a concept or being able to apply it straight away. I perceived no impatience from Andrew when I was struggling with a particular topic, and received nothing but understanding. I was given the space and time I needed to improve and work on my weaknesses.
